| Comments: | WHEN I first visited the Thai island of Koh Samui 21 years ago, it was a lush, green backpackers' paradise with dirt-cheap bungalows beside white sandy beaches. There were no luxury resorts or direct flights to the island. The few tourists who found their way there had to take a not-so-comfy boat ride from the mainland. This friendly tropical island was a wonderful place for a cheap, relaxing beachside Thai holiday and my friends and I stayed for weeks. When I recently returned to Koh Samui, knowing it had been well and truly "discovered" by both well-heeled tourists and resort developers, I was relieved to find it was still simply a beautiful island. To uncover the true delights of Samui you need to get out and explore its attractions beyond the busy tourist centres and to meet some of the friendly locals. Jetting in on one of Thai Airways' twice-daily 45-minute flights from Bangkok, I look down on hills still thickly covered with coconut palms - there are about two mil |

| Comments: | Jumping on a huge banca, we sailed to two of the 40 curiously shaped islands. Hua Talab, was the first island, where visitors could feed the fishes, snorkel and view the colorful corals around the deep shore line. Then we sailed to another island close by. The white sand and coconut groves were a great place to have a light picnic, swim or just relax on the hammocks under the shade of trees, fronting the beach. The two-hour trip ended too soon, as we were off again driving on the well-paved road while touring the other half of the island, with a stop for an excellent lunch at the five-star The Cliff Restaurant. Perched on a cliff top, overlooking a white sand bay cove, we dug into this resto’s specialties of Thai, as well as Italian and other European dishes of superb quality. Fully satisfied, we continued our tour to different resorts and a shopping mall, where we just had to stop and grab several Thai condiments and herbs in bottles for our Thai cooking at home. Our fa |

| Comments: | Water is a fundamental source for human needs in everyday life. But on the island of Samui, water demand already exceeds supply. Seawater is therefore an option but how does this work? Let’s find out in this report from Thai News Agency. Hin Lad waterfall is among the only three raw water resources in the popular Gulf of Thailand tourist destination of Samui. Raw water is extracted from the waterfall, passed through a series of basic filters and then distributed to the island’s community. However, in 2004, the irregular rainfall, an increasing number of tourists coupled the rising demand from the agricultural and business sectors and city expansion led to a water shortage on the island. Warakorn Waraluck, a resident said “Water is a basic human need. Here people consume a lot of water in their everyday life. The water shortage has affected the tourism industry.” To ease the crisis, seawater is proving an alternative source. The Provincial Waterworks Authority has bro |

| Comments: | Rarely does an airport have tourists scrabbling for their cameras, but we are not even off the tarmac and Koh Samui has already delivered its first surprise. As the open buggies spirit us towards the terminal, the cross breeze like jets from a blow dryer, the scene up ahead is already looking like a welcome respite. The thatched pavilions, lotus ponds in bright pink bloom, frangipani trees and little garden pockets seems more resort than arrivals hall. A 45-minute flight has transported us from the traffic jams and madness of Bangkok into this little oasis. Our guide flashes us a smile as she notices the instant change in mood. "The airport was designed with a tropical island feel," she says, as we bow in unison to accept our leis. Just as well. With some flights now arriving just minutes apart at this busy hub, a resort atmosphere helps distract from the irritation of some lengthy baggage delays. At just 25kilometres long by 21kilometres wide, and with much of its centre impenet |

| Comments: | Thailand's seventh Kojh Samui regatta - Cpatain Marty Rijkuir www.asianyachting.com reports on the final day. Eight knots of north westerly breeze majestically materialized around start time, and Race 6 got underway in earnest. But attempts at a second race were aborted as the wind faded away as quickly as it had appeared. It seemed that after a long hot week often drifting around with no wind everyone was keen to get the last day over and done with. Frank Pong's Jelik led the fleet around the course, but with the 50 footers hot on his tail was bound to finish up down the order. Neil Pryde's Hi-Fi crossed the line 1m 26s later and looked to be in the box seat. 55 sec later Bill Bremner’s Foxy Lady IV breasted the line after recovering from being called OCS, and as they trailed the overall leader by one point could be the biggest threat. Sam Chan's FfreeFire 52 was next, closely followed by the Nick Burns/Fred Kinmonth's co-owned Fortis Mandrake. Almost six minutes after Jelik |

| Comments: | Sizzling Lu-sen set the pace in Koh Samui KOH SAMUI (Thailand): Taiwan's Lien Lu-sen enjoyed a three-stroke lead at the Bangkok Airways Open after firing a five-under-par 66 in the third round yesterday. The 33-year-old in-form Lien took control on day, three thanks to six birdies against a lone bogey, in the US$300,000 Asian Tour event. With a three-day total of 13-under-par 200, Lien set the pace ahead of Thai duo Chinnarat Phadungsil who posted a 65 and Thaworn Wiratchant who recorded a 68 to lie in a tie for second place at the Santiburi Samui Country Club. Overnight leader Antonio Lascuna of the Philippines endured a triple bogey at the third hole as he fell to joint fourth place after a 72 alongside Japan’s Shintaro Kai who carded a 70. Thailand’s Prayad Marksaeng stumbled to a late bogey on the 17th hole for a 68 also in a tie for fourth spot together with Englishman Chris Rodgers who posted a 69 and four strokes behind the leader. |
