| THE HISTORY OF THE BOAT SUITES |
|
For many years now tourists have chosen The Imperial Boat House Hotel as the ideal destination to spend an exotic tropical holiday in Thailand. One of the reasons for this is the unique concept of the hotel with its strong nautical theme and most notably, the thirty-four authentic rice barges. These were once fully functional river barges that operated along Thailand’s famous Chao Phraya River or River of Kings. As you may well know the old name for Thailand was the Kingdom of Siam, a name synonymous with the spice trade made famous by such people as Marco Polo. The principal means of transport in those days was by water and so expansive were the waterways in the capital, that it was once known as the Venice of the East. With the abundance of teak in Thailand at that time and the many qualities of this wood, it was the natural choice for the construction of the rice barges and continued to be so up to recent times. Thirty-four of these working boats were transported across the Gulf of Thailand to the island of Samui to take up residence at The Imperial Boat House Hotel. Never having been sailed on seawater before, the journey took its toll on these natural treasures and painstaking restoration was required. After the exterior had been completed work began on converting the barges into luxury suites. The great attraction of the boat suites is their rich heritage and their natural wooden construction, indeed they are the only ones of their kind in the world today! The antiquity of the barges and their colorful history are interwoven with the unique experience of staying in these suites. You might encounter this during your stay, as the barges may creek from the slightest movements in the wood, caused by changes in temperature and humidity. At times they may even smell a little, due to the effects of years of transporting rice to various destinations along the River of Kings, which has engrained itself into the teak wood exterior of the barge. Each rice barge is a porthole to a bygone age, and we hope that these rare disturbances will not prove too troublesome, but conversely, will heighten your appreciation of the unrivaled experience of staying in a boat suite during your holiday on beautiful Koh Samui.
